Cocoa Bean

Sometimes, when destiny knocks at your door, you should invite them in for cupcakes and soymilk because they might introduce you to a really sweet puppy.  Destiny, aka Laura, over at Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is just the kind of dedicated volunteer making the dream of pet-people matching possible.  Their organization has only existed for about 6 months and they already rescued over 700 animals.

My sister and I have been scouring the local Arlington and Alexandria Shelters with weekly visits and daily scans of their websites, but after a few strikes out, we finally found our dog.  I sent in an Adoption Questionnaire about a week ago after I met Laura at Crafty Bastards at the beginning of the month.  She did a phone interview Wednesday and after I sent my follow-up paperwork this morning, we’ve been matched, been approved after our home visit, and Coco Bean will come home with us tomorrow!

I won’t say I’m not nervous.  The reason we tried shelters with boarding first was so we could meet the animals and make sure  they could connect to us.  However, I have to say, after a couple months of researching, I really love Lucky Dogs’s process.  They animals are in the gentle hands of foster families until they can meet their owner through Adoption Events.  Meanwhile, adoption coordinators work to pair by need rather than first come first serve, enabling more numerous and compatible matches.

I’m so excited to meet Cocoa Bean.  When Jen and I were toying with names, I told her, if we adopt a dog that doesn’t know its name yet and it suits them, I’d love the name Cocoa Bean.  Cocoa is close enough!  I believe she’ll bring a lot of joy to the family and I really look forward to doting over her and shooing her away from the batter or cuttings that slip off the counter or tripping over her when she finds a perfect place to lay out in the middle of it all.  I look forward to hearing all your suggestions and sharing my happiness with you all, too.  And yes, she’s definitely getting homeade treats.

A Dozen Flours

I love movies as much almost as I love being in my kitchen.  So when I’m doing something menial at my computer, I’m often streaming something on Hulu or Netflix.  So, whose seen Stranger than Fiction, raise your hand?  I’m not a huge fan of romantic comedies, but it struck the right chords with it’s underdog-type characters.  I love it, especially the cheesy scene where Harold wins over tempetuous baker, Ana Pascal.

Ana is my hero.  I love imagining her arriving at the bakery at 4:30 or 5:00 strong-arming a yeast beast so fresh bread is ready for afternoon sandwhiches.  I love that it’s a community with smiles, friends, and neighbors including bums hanging out and getting free food.  What baker can handle the storefront and the baking?  While my own conncoctions have been my nocturnal retreat, I hope one day to live the dream of punk baker.  Not only does Ana have the most charming bakery, bad ass philanthropic zeal, and a great open kitchen, but that’s probably the most romantic gift I’ve ever heard of.

Last night, I reorganized my kitchen.  Gutted the cabinets and all.  Wiped out all the flour, dust and shmutz while cursing the gremlins that stole the mates for all my plastic containers.  In the end, I had an emmaculate kitchen and a satisfied sense of order.  There’s a place for all my favorite appliances, tins, pyrex, and dry goods…  I realize I have 8 flours and 3 starches… maybe one day, I’ll meet the real Ana Pascal.

Get Lost

When things are intense at work, sometimes I feel a travel bug is just about to get me. I feel like meandering.  The Cupcakeologist knows how to pull at my heartstrings.  I need not wander when I have memories of Italy flooding my eyes.  Ahh, Firenze, how I miss The Oil Shoppe and Perche No! and Vivoli…  Curling up in my homestay on Piazza Santa Croce to watch  Roma,Citta Aperta.  Better yet, I remember walking to the edge of the city and coming back from the markets with fresh fruit, cheese and bread to share with the birds while I layed out on the legs of the Ponte Santa Trinita, writing poems instead of working on my thesis.  Don’t judge, but Sfizzi Pizza, a watermelon, and a jug of wine do make the perfect summer night full of dancing and searching and getting lost only to walk two blocks out of the way to be driven a block home by a creepy artist.  It was a good place to learn about beauty, the-not-so-pretty, and passions that make life feel meaningful…. such a long time ago and such a short 2 months, but thinking of it makes me feel all fuzzy and warm.

This all inspried by The Cupcaketologist, one of my very favorite cupcake aficiandos.  She make nuts sexy.  For every cupcake, there’s a stunning image and a terribly romantic story.    It’s not a kitsche collection of anything, just a really tasteful life reflection presented through confection.  Beck, that’s a good blog.  I love getting lost on the internet…

Not as sexy, expect to see a Spumoni in the test kitchen here shortly.

kt, I found ground cinnamon in your bag again… are you dealing?

It’s true, I’ve been dishing it out Mama B style… relentlessly.  I’m not the garden variety bag lady.  You can’t catch me at da’club ’cause  when I’m not feeding you cupcakes or working like a dog, I’m chillin with my  homies at the grocery or kicking it in the kitchen… that’s how I do me.  I’m on a first name basis with the late night stockers at more than one Safeway.  I love grocery shopping after a  long shift at Artie’s.  Being surrounded by colorful plenty puts me at ease.

So, what’s cinnamon got to do with anything?  Pumpkin cupcakes, that’s what.  And I’ve been experimenting.  I’m all jazzed for Autumn after pureeing fresh pumpkin and going apple picking.  Green to gold against these grey skies makes me crave a long morning in bed and endless nights in the kitchen making delicious meals and sweets.

Here are some pictures from some of my favorite October things…  Crafty Bastards, pumpkin prep, apple picking, pumpkin cupcakes, and saltenas for RB’s baby baptism!

Pumpkin tastes so good as a cupcake...

Will my AmeriCAN Dream Cupcakes win me a Nobel Peace Prize?

Dad was watching the Today Show as usual (he’s turned into a teary pouty middle-aged woman) and Ann Curry barreled through the announcement that Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize.  ::Gasp::  Everyone’ surprised, and at first I was realing.
I’m glad I had baking time set aside to process.  The AmeriCAN Dream cupcakes are almost grotesque, I love it.  It so suits my reaction to the Nobel Committee’s announcement.  I called my two best friend Joy and Becky to hash it out.  Did I miss something?  When was the last time Obama went on a hunger strike?  But that isn’t the point. It’s not really about the man, or his actions exactly.   It’s the messages and how they move others to make a better life.  It’s about how he represents a shift in attitude and approach; dignified posture that sheds the shameful, neanderthal approach of the Bush administration and gets back to approaching leaders and talking instead of shooting.  I have to agree, he must be stretched thin, and not that much policy has changed, but he’s leading a movement, he’s changing minds.  Maybe he hasn’t gone on strike but he’s made moves, and moreover, I’m he’s sacrificed.  He’s going to make so much more possible. I worry that as this award is somewhat premature, it amplifies the expectation we all place on him.  Can he really save us?
Mr. President, free cupcakes for life.  That’ a promise.  Just say when.
I’m glad I got to churn out these awkward litle lovelies on such a special day.
Until the President calls, I’ll have to share elsewhere.

Where’s my cupcake, bitch?!

So, I work at a mid-sized restaurant in Fairfax and I’ve really grown to love the staff…  In fact my favorite greeting when I walk into the kitchen is a nice raw shouting match between myself and the Exec Chef, Mike Gallagher: “Where’s my cupcake, bitch?!”  It’s so full of love.

The restaurant has been a great place to share and learn about food.  In fact the GAR’s test kitchen is in Artie’s, so I officially get the professional opinions of chefs from all over the GAR company/Fairfax sampling my creations.  There’s also the opinions of the rest of the staff, too.

Then that got me thinking…

I’ve been dishing out, now it’s your turn.  Tell me about your favorite thing to bake, or even a favorite memory of something someone’s baked or shared with you.  ‘Cause that’s what it’s all about.  The experience: of sharing, the look on a face, new and old friends, a little icing in the corner of your mouth…  whatev!  Send me your songs of triumph and bitter failure.

BTW, not vegan but delish: Artie’s has some of the best desserts in the company AND we have the White Chocolate Bread Pudding back for Fall…
