Where you been, girl?!

So I actually took a vacation.  No really.  I stopped working for almost 3 whole weeks this summer.  It was amazing to feel my own thoughts again, really!   I’ll never take it for granted again!!

I took a week for my birthday. I spent time with my lil sis and family friends at the beach and closed the weekend with my mom and some besties camping.  Becky surprised ME with cupcakes(thank you for the pictures, Lars!):

bake me a cakeAbout a month later, I took two weeks to head west and see Portland, Seattle and Los Angeles.  Amazing thrift shops, food, transportation, and lifestyles in general!  Being away from my own kitchen didn’t stop me from baking.  Nomad style, I anticipated my locations and hosts ( I stayed for free with friends). I made peanut butter chocolate while I stayed in PDX with Babbie and then had a great time doing some fresh from the garden grilling in Seattle!  LA is not a cupcake wasteland, I hear a lot of people are getting by on cupcake diets!  I just ran out of money and sight-seeing time. However, the Pacific Northwest definitely stole my heart.  Now I understand why Isa moved there and Cakespy has so much to talk about.   (:

Aesthetic

So what do you care, right?  Just gimme a lump of sugar to shove in my mouth!

My friends, like any other item that might take a moment to appreciate, I believe cupcakes too tiptoe between the kitsch 6-year-old birthday and the stunning culinary art worthy of the finest affairs.

That said, I’m not a fancy girl.  I like to keep true to the origins of things.  That means I like to use natural ingredients that feel good to eat and cupcake wrappers/toppers that don’t get in the way of the first bite.  I believe in a healthy marriage between toppings/fillings and cake, working a playful harmony to hit the g-pot on your tongue.  And undoubtedly, they should make you smile!

So what cupcakes have achieved these feats? My favorite by far has been that of a young lady working an order-based business in good ‘ol PDX. I know her as Lisa Clark with the moniker Petunia’s pies and pastries.  Her sweet little business cardlists her email as lisaclark55@hotmail.com.  I highly suggest you send her an order when you visit Oregon.  She was selling at the Alberta Art Walk, a monthly community street fair.  Lisa’s cupcake was a classic pairing of fruits with the gentle whip of frosting leaving a rim of golden cupcake peaking out.  The cupcake was a delicious and soft (VEGAN!!!!) lemon and elderberry with an edible impatient on top of a beautiful of white frosting.  My apologies for not offering a better picture…  It was ALL the things I wish for in a cupcake!

You started it!

So for Lent 2k9 I grilled my homies for the DL on how to be vegan, but I knew I wouldn’t make it without sweets.  My BFFF/muse, Becky, introduced me The Post Punk Kitchen and Isa Chandra Moskowitz changed my life. Not only has she created a series of stunning all-purpose cook books, my personal fave is Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World!

Thus started a strange and therapeutic obsession.  During the most manic period of double shifts, I was churning out individual little friends, fine for anyone between the voyeuristic food pornographer and the voracious teenage stoner.  It’s been a pleasure to leaf through the pages of Isa’s books to tweak and tinker.

Here are a the first few pics from my vegan debut: pistachio rosewater (my all-time fave), the mint chocolate chip, and tiramisu!

There are so many more to try! I’m definitely interested in requests.   Especially concepts that turn actions into sweets.
